Salobreña Town Hall has decided to chop down weakened palm trees that could come down in the high winds forecast for today.
Maintenance workers began on several palm trees on Plaza Juan Carlos I; ones that had structural deformations in their trunks. Some of those had also been weakend by the Picudo Rojo (palm-tree beetle).

From there, they will be examining the highest palm trees around town for signs of weakness. The few roots that they have are also sitting in sodden earth, given the rainfall in these last few weeks.
“Our absolute priority is to guarantee the physical integrity of citizens ,” said the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Luis Cano, adding, “We regret the loss of trees but there is an imminent risk of the wind bringing them down and we cannot allow the sort of tragic incidents that have occurred in other municipalities to happen here.”
He concluded by saying that a replanting programme will begin to replace the ones cut down or having already fallen down, with tree species that are better adapted to our climate and more resistent to extreme weather.

It’s heartening to read that these lofty interlopers are to be replaced by (hopefully native) species more suited to the local climate.
