Pico Navachica Rescue

The Guardia Civil Mountain Rescue Group rescued two young hikers, aged 16 and 18, on Tuesday night after they were forced to halt as night had fallen and they had no torches.

This took place on their way down from Pico Navachica which is behind Nerja, and which is the highest peak within the Sierra Almijara standing at 1,831 metres. It is snow capped at the moment with the snowline starting at 1,600 metres.

When the rescue team located them, they found them in good health although feeling the cold, which the rescue team remedied with warm clothing and hot drinks.

The rescue team, then, escorted them down to where their relatives were waiting.

The Guardia Civil reminds hikers that they should properly plan their route, checking weather forecasts, and always carrying basic, safety gear (such as flashlights or headlamps) especially during days with fewer daylight hours and in high-mountain environments where conditions can change rapidly.

These two young hikers were not the only people rescued recently, as the Guardia Civil Mountain Rescue Group, rescued a Spanish tourist with a broken tibia in the mountains behind the village if Frigiliana and a 70-year-old, Dutchman, who fractured his hip on a route in the Río Higuerón area.
