Barrio El Moruno Overhaul

When a party holds the absolute majority in the Town Council and abstains in a Plenary vote, it's probably because they don't like the motion but consider that they can't be seen to oppose it.

Perhaps that is not the reasoning behind why the Mayor’s party in Almuñécar decided to abstain on a vote to spend money on Barrio El Moruno, by why no vote against the motion if you don’t agree?

Anyway, the Vice-Secretary General of the local socialist party (PSOE) Josué Díaz, expressed his satisfaction that the motions put forward by his party had passed – yes, there were, in fact, two motions.

Both involved improving public services and convivience, regarding access to Barrio El Moruno and to schoolyards outside schooling hours, as well as the extentions of opening times for kiddy parks and barrio sports facilities, especially over weekends and the school-holiday periods.

Josué Díaz explained, “We want that children and the youth in general have at their disposal nearby, safe spaces, which are well equiped so that they can play and practice sports in the open air,” adding, “This is something that already exists in many Andalusian municipalities.”

The other motion was for an overhaul of Barrio El Moruno to sort out long-troubling accessibility problems general urban deterioration and insufficient public lighting, as well as a lack of maintenance and public spaces.

However, the most important thing, the PSOE considers, is a bridge over Río Seco to link El Moruno to Barrio San Sebastián – a lane already passes behind IES Al Ándalus, but crosses the riverbed to reach El Moruno, which is obviously not transitable when the river is flowing.

“Six years after the PP electoral pledge of 2019, Mayor Juanjo Ruiz Joya and the PP have been incapable of carrying out this task, just the same as they are unable to get a new PGOU [general urban planning]through which is still dragging on 14 years later,” said the V.S.G.

Editorial comment: to be fair, the Mayor is forging ahead with a footbridge over the same river further down, alongside Calle Guadix.
