High-Speed Waiters

This year will be the third year that Nerja has held its waiter race as part of the town's fiestas, which will last until and include Monday.

Nearly 40 waiters and waitresses participated this year over a distance of 500 metres through the Balcón area of the municipality. Armed with trays bearing glasses of water, they had to cover this distance without ‘losing their tray load’ and in the shortest time.

The rules were a bit different to the two previous years, when the prize went to the first over the finishing line with the most liquid still in the glasses. No, this year it will be the person who covers the distance in the least time with at least 1,000ml of water of of the 1,500ml that they had set out with from the Balcón de Europa.

To make sure the runners and crowds were sufficiently inspired, a brass band played something inspiring. The weather behaved itself, as well.

The winner was Carlos Ramos, from the Hotel Balcón de Europa, with a time of three minutes and one second, accomplished without drowning anybody. For this feat he won 700 euros in cash, a 5L bottle of red wine and a crate of Cruzcampo beer (busman’s holiday?)

Second place went to Francisco Ruiz, from the Restaurant Playa y Sol on Burriana Beach, winning 500 euros and several alcoholic beverages, whilst Third place went to Miguel Cano, from Cafetería Plaza, who won a prize of 400 euros and a drinks package.

So, there you have it, next time you’re complaining that the waiter is slow and that you still haven’t been served – bribe him or her with a crate of beer!
