The Junta de Andalucía has just announced that from next year you can put veterinary bills for your pet down as an expense in your tax declarations.
It’s part of a package of tax breaks included in the Regional Budget, explained the Regional PM, Juanma Moreno. In fact, he said that the six previous tax breaks brought in during his six years in office have increased tax revenue for the regional coffers rather than reduced it.
The tax-break concerning pets is calculated to affect around 180,000 Andalusians. The PM stated, “We want to make it easier for Andalusians with lower taxes,” adding, “We’ve done well along these lines, and we are determined to continue moving forward.”
He made this announcement during a forum organised by a national daily, El Confidencial, explaining that families who acquire a pet will be able to deduct 30 percent of veterinary expenses, up to a limit of up to 100 euros, during the first year. If the animal is adopted from a shelter, its owner will be able to claim the deduction for three years, and if the animal is a care animal, such as a guide dog, the deduction can be applied for the animal’s entire life.
This latest measure includes, in addition to guide dogs for blind people, those that detect low blood sugar or epileptic seizures, and dogs that assist women victims of gender-based violence. In these cases, the reduction can be applied with immediate effect, meaning they don’t necessarily have to be adopted or acquired now.
Juanma Moreno considers that, “Pets are truly another member of our families, who give us affection and not only need affection from us, but also a range of benefits.”
Editorial comment: Spain has certainly come a long way leaving behind cases of animal cruelty as anecdotal, perhaps.
