Castle Opens to Public

The Castillo de la Calahorra, which has appeared in many films, will be opened to the public from Friday the 26th of this month.

Originally in private hands, this 500-year-old castle was purchased by the Provincial Council around the end of July.

Public viewing will be on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays but entrance tickets must be obtained via Internet, as the running of the castle has been handed to a private company which will handle groups of up to 30 visitors.

According to the Chairman of the Provincial Council, Francis Rodríguez, they have been busy since its passing into public hands with improvements in aspects such as safety in order to open it up to the general public as soon as possible.

In the near future there will be an exposition of Andalusí heritage and some rooms will be dedicated to showing how the castle has played an important part in the cinemagraphic world. They also intend to bring objects of artistic value from around the province to show them there.

Furthermore, they are in contact with the organisers behind the Festival de Música y Danza so that a concert can be held there.

“We’ve carried out necessary work in record time in order to open the castle but it requires much investment to carry out a serious project,” he said. Chairman Rodríguez also said that they are looking into EU funding or the 2-percent funding set aside for cultural projects when public works are carried out.

The second phase will include restoring one of the towers so it can be included in the visitable areas of the castle, which is the courtyard, upper cloister and three rooms totalling around 1,000 sq/m.

The tours around the castle will last about 40 minutes. Visiting times on Fridays and Saturdays are from 10.00h to 14.00h and then from 15.00h to 19.00h, Sunday will be two hours shorter: 10.00h to 14.00h and then from 15.00h to 17.00h.
