Politicians in Vélez-Málaga are squabbling over how much it cost to get aircraft to participate in the annual, very popular, airshow.
The Town Hall is governed by a coalition council formed by the PP and which GIPMTM –which is arguably an instantly forgettable acronym – and the chief opposition party is Andalucía por Sí.
The coalition claim that the airshow cost around 200,000 euros whereas the opposition put it closer to 2,000,000 euros.
Opposition leader, José Pino, has claimed it to be this much higher figure and says that it was confirmed to him by Town Hall clerks.
However, the Vice-Mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Pérez Atencia, appeared before the press to claim that Sr. Pino was lying. A politician lying? Who ever has heard of that!
Not happy with calling the man a liar, he went on to say, “This gentleman has cheapened the politicis in this municipality and lacked respect for this administration.” *Cough!* He even accused him of shamelessly muck spreading – take that, you cad!
The Vice Mayor, after officially requesting the total costs of the 2024 Airshow himself, said that it was 205,109.44 euros. Where did Sr. Pino get that figure of 2,000, 000 from? From his, “hate towards Torre del Mar,” claimed the Vice Mayor
Note that Vélez-Málaga is the capital of the Axarquía, to which Torre del Mar (where the airshow is hosted) belongs.
Not one to miss a chance to strike back, Sr. Jose Pino said, “Those expenses that they have shown us do no include the slap-up dinners, nor the hotels,” that the Town Hall covers for those that participate. Neither, he claims, has the governing parties been willing to give the 2025 figures.
Editorial comment: so, there we have it, neither side is backing down and in the meantime the airshow is being tarnished by political quibbling, squabbling and wobbling.
