Most of people who have lived in Almuñécar for a dozen years are more will know who Doctor Willy is, or better said, as he died at the beginning of last month.
His full name was Wilfredo Portorreal Guerrero who set up his surgery on a narrow street on the corner of Bar Cactus in Almuñécar after arriving in the 60s. He had emigrated from Puerto Rico.
Many foreigners living in Almuñécar in the early days of his practice here used him because he spoke excellent English, when finding a doctor in Granada who did was a bit of a task.
The first time that I met him was in 83 as he was tending to Boris training in his final battle with cancer.
On the Facebook announcement that his family made on the 3rd of August, over 600 people left comments marking his passing, expressing their condolences and sadness at the news.
The Mayor, Juanjo Ruiz Joya, announced that he would put forward in the next Plenary Meeting of the Town Council the motion to name this narrow alley where his practice was after him. Presently, it doesn’t have one.
However, you can’t help feeling, that this man, who dedicated 50 years of his life here, providing medical attention for those with tight budgets, deserves a more transited street to bear his name, but then again, this narrow alley which leads into Plaza Dr. Álvarez, is where he worked
