EU Funding Lost

Six months after the Section Two of Rules Distribution Network lost EU funding (Next Generation), the Central Government has not specified how it will finance a work valued at 80 million euros.

It was inn 2021 that Government committed European funds to execute the first two sections of the pipelines, (a pipeline system that the Costa Tropical has been waiting for, for irrigation and domestic use) for over 20 years)

However, in May the EU funding was lost because delays in the work meant that it wouldn’t be completed by 2026, which was a stipulation that came with the grant.

The first phase, which you can seen in the riverbed below Vélez de Benaudalla, is ‘safe’ but the second phase, which has not even begun, certainly won’t be finished by 2026. In fact, it hasn’t even received its final approval for going out to tender.

So, here we are and no wiser concerning where the Central Government intends to find the 80.3-million euros needed.

For the first part of the Rules pipelines, (Desglosado Número IX), the Central Government, the Junta de Andalucía and the Mancomunidad de Municipios signed a financing agreement where the bulk of the budget, 80%, was provided by the ministry with aid from Europe. For the second section, the Comunidad General de Regantes is confident that the administrations will reach a similar agreement.

The second phase, when finally fully funded, will benefit a total of 3,872 hectares in 19 irrigation communities in Almuñécar, Los Guájares, Ítrabo, Jete, Molvízar, Motril, Vélez de Benaudalla and Salobreña.
