Restoration of Puerta de La Mina

Alhama de Granada has received a grant to restore one of its heritage sites, La Puerta de la Mina.

Provincial representatives accompanied the Mayor, Jesús Ubiña, on a visit to the ongoing work at this archaeological site near the old Medina Áraba.

Thanks to funding from the Programa Provincial de Conservación y Uso del Patrimonio Arqueológico y Paleontológico Rural belonging to the Provincial Council of Granada, the first phase is going ahead on the access to this heritage site.

The budget totals 96,868 euros of which 66,868 comes from the Provincial Council; the Town Hall has to find the remaining 30,000 euros.

The representative of the Provincial Council said that this financial support was to “help invigorate local tourism and cultural activity, thus stabilise the population.” Mayor Jesús Ubiña thanked the Council for the interest shown in municipal heritage as this is very important for small towns and villages, which are bleeding population away.

The project began in 2021 when a team from the University of Granada evaluated the state of conservation of the Puerta de La Mina, including an area within known as the Mazmoras (dungeons) with a budget of 20,000 euros.

La Puerta de la Mina, includes a coracha (a protective wall leading to a water supply) and poterna (postern gate). The wall’s masonary suffers from extensive deterioration, which is why work must be carried out to preserve it.
