Three Deaths in The Mountains

The weekend just past saw three deaths in Spanish mountains, with the first one taking place within the province of Málaga.

The first death involved a 21-year-old Irish woman in the El Chorro area within the municipality of Álora in Málaga. Although it is known that she fell 150 metres, it is not known how this came about. This incident was reported to the emergency coordination centre (112) at 19.10h on Friday.

The second accident took place in Lleida, (Solsonès) on Saturday when a 30-year-old man plunged to his death around midday.

He had been scaling the Canalda rockface, which is at the Fills del Vent. He fell between 15 and 20 metres. Fire personnel with specialised equipment retrieved the body that was suspended on a rope about 150 metres above ground. They also rescued his companion who was unharmed.

The last incident, which took place on Sunday, claimed the life of a 44-year-old mountaineer from Mortera (Piélagos, Cantabria). The climber had fallen whilst scaling the Peña Vieja in the Picos de Europa. His female companion raised the alarm and a helicopter was sent out to retrieve the body.

This couple, who were both experienced mountain climbers, reached the summit around one in the afternoon. He lost his footing in the snow after losing a crampon and fell 300 metres.
