Madrid Bans e-Scooter Hire

Cities all over Spain are fed up with companies that hire out e-Scooters, or better said the people who use them.

As they’re not their own property, some users just dump them on pavements, park them on zebra crossings and even throw them into rivers. It’s not even a question of the rising number of accidents involving these PMVs but how they are abused, causing inconveniences to others.

Madrid, therefore, joins, Bilbao, Valencia, Barcelona and Paris, and others, in banning PMV rentals. Madrid has 6,000 such companies which will begin to disappear come October as their licences come up for renewal, as PMVs, like 49cc vehicles, come under municipal authority.

Apparently, many of these companies have been falling down on their obligations, such as insurance coverage, not covering the whole city and not having installed devices which prevents them from being parked or being ridden where they shouldn’t.

Lastly, during 2023 there were almost 300 accidents involving these vehicles, with 187 people being injured to varying degrees and 11 losing their lives.
