The Provincial Council of Granada has put a contract out to tender for the demolition of the Turismo Tropical on Playa San Cristóbal, just down from Aparthotel Chinasol.
The contract has a budget of 449,000 euros, so whoever puts in the cheapest offer, gets the job to demolish this complex that has stood eight years with its doors locked and steadedly deteriorating.
Council Chairman, Francis Rodríguez, considers this is the first step towards providing a social centre and accommodation for the elderly from all over the province to spend their holidays conventiently positioned on San Cristóbal beach road and paseo.
It was decided to demolish the existing complex rather than renovate it, given its deteriorated state; i.e., it would be cheaper to knock it down and start from scratch. As for how the demolition work will be carried out, the first part will be manual; ripping out salvageable items and then, once finished, a controlled demolition using heavy machinery.
With the bidding process concluded by the 2nd of September, it is hoped that the demolition and site clearing will have concluded before the year is out.
In the meantime the Provincial Council and Almuñécar Town Hall are working on the plans of the new construction.
Mayor Juan José Ruiz Joya, thanked the Council, which happens to be run by his own party, for its committment: “We are quite happy that the Council has agreed that there can be an underground car park below the new complex, with room for 150 vehicles, which will alleviate the lack of parking along the Paseo de San Cristóbal,”, he said.
