A Spanish couple from Armilla (Granada metropolitan area) were on holiday in Cáñar in the Alpujarra when they came across a crashed car on the A-4132. That's the road linking Órgiva with the upper Alpujarra such as Pampaneira.
They had driven down to Órgiva to do some shopping and on their way back they came across the car, which had crashed into an embankment. The driver was a man in his early 60s.
Fortunately for the driver, the husband is a fireman working for the city of Granada and knows all about First Aid and CPR. The wife works in an administrative roll at the Castell de Ferro medical centre and is equally well versed in First Aid.
The both began applying CPR to the victim, who had suffered a heart attack which they had quickly diagnosed upon taking his pulse and checking his breathing; he was in a state of cardiac-respiratory arrest.
The accident had occurred moments before their arrival and the vehicle travelling behind the victim’s car stopped to pull the unconscious driver out of the car.
The couple continued for about 10 minutes which was when he began to breath, so they applied the jaw-thrust manoeuver.
Whilst they were waiting for an ambulance that they had requested, another ambulance with a patient on board came along so they waved it down. The doctor who was travelling in the ambulance stayed with them until the ambulance they had requested arrived to take the victim to Hospital Santa Ana.
