Two sisters committed suicide just hours before they were due to be evicted from their home.

In the early morning of yesterday in Barcelona, with an eviction scheduled to take place later that morning, two sisters aged 54 and 64 took their own lives.

The flat owner had taken the sisters to court over the rent, or lack of it, in May 2023. By then, the sisters had not paid their rent since March 2021 and had run up a debt of 9,000 euros.

The sisters had not turned up at the hearing this January to plead their case so the date for their eviction was set for Monday the 1st of July.

The City Hall, Social Services had no vulnerability reports on their situation, who had tried to contact the sisters but with no result.
