Worried Neighbours

It seems that locals living near Motril Port are concerned about new oil-storage installations, so much so that the port has issued a press statement about it.

“It has nothing to do with a chemical plant nor toxic waste, but rather the transfer to the Zona de Actividades Logísticas (ZAL) of oil installations that have been in the port for the last 30 years, used in foodstuff and liquid fertiliser,” read the communiqué.

The press release went on to explain that this work is being carried out owing to the need to modernise these existing installations in an area of the port that is more suitable, making it easier to operate, clean and to fill, in accordance with standing regulations.

The said installations in the ZAL are 300 metres from the nearest housing and has stringent safety systems.

Finally, the communiqué underlines the fact that the installations contain harmless, nonflammable substances that do not produce strong smells as it all passes from the docks through underground conduits straight to the storage tanks.
