Sierra Nevada Road Rockslide

A rock slide affecting the ascending lane of the access road to Sierra Nevada (A-395) on Saturday is causing traffic-flow problems.

GRA SN Rockslide on A394 Access RoadAt first, the Guardia Civil were needed to alternate the traffic along the remaining lane and intermittently stop it all together when earth-moving equipment was manoeuvring. However, roadwork traffic lights have since been installed.

The rockslide happened near kilometre point 21 and this emergency work will hopefully halt during Semana Santa and continue afterwards.

The Servicio de Conservación de Carreteras are still juggling with their calculations because work not only entailed removing fallen rocks and repairing the tarmac, but also the much more complicated work of stabilising the hillside.

But snowfall has also caused problems leaving one bus straddled across the road, causing tailbacks, according to the Policía Local de Monachil, whose task it is to police the Sierra Nevada ski resort.

The Junta de Andalucía has hired a company that is specialised in stabilising roadside embankments for this task, which is a delicate one as this road is the main artery for the ski resort and we are right in the middle of the skiing season.

Finally, there was a similar situation caused by an unstable hillside on this road in January 2023, which took five months to sort out.
