While a lorry caught fire on the A-7 yesterday morning, another vehicle caught fire on the Sierra Nevada mountain road that same afternoon, this time it was a saloon car.
The incident, which was reported in to 112 emergency call centre at around 17.00h, took place within the municipality of Monachil at kilometre point 28 on the A-395. This is the main road between the city of Granada and the Sierra Nevada ski resort.
The Granada-city fire service attended the call out, as did the Guardia Civil traffic police and the Monachil Policía Local, as well as road-maintenance workers.
The traffic police had to shut down the road and provide an alternative route until the flames were out. Fortunately, nobody was hurt as the occupants had all managed to get out of the vehicle before it was engulfed by the flames, even managing to rescue their luggage.
The car had pulled off onto the hard shoulder when smoke appeared so that once the flames were out, it didn’t present an obstacle to traffic on the lane
