When we say music is big in Benamocarra, we're referring to the instruments, although music is undeniably popular, too.
The village, farming community might be struggling with water problems but tourism is holding its own. It is the birthplace of he famous Malagueño composer, Edurdo Ocón, who was born there in 1833. It also has the oldest Banda Municipal de Música that is still in existence within the whole of Andalucía
So, it is of little surprise that music is king for the Municipal Tourism Board, making the municipal slogans, Benamocarra, cuna de la música’ and Benamocarra suena. And how best to visualise this? By placing giant musical instruments around town!
Mayor Abdeslam Lucena, who has held that post since 2003, began having the village adorned with these musical attractions dotted around the streets. So far there are six monster musical instruments, which received their inauguration last September, coinciding with the 22nd annual Día de la Música.
The Councillor for Tourism, José Ramón Palomo (PMP), has promised that in the coming months another half dozen instruments will be added. So far the municipal coffers have spent 13,000 euros on them.
So who makes them? A company based in the province of Cádiz makes the from fibreglass and resin, so they will resist the wear and tear of our climate.
