A reader comments on the change of usage rules at the Almuñécar municipal swimming pool...
Martin,
I recently returned to swimming in Almunecar and was greeted by a very odd change.
It seems that your pool membership is severely restricted to only one hour on any given day. Not only that, your one hour is restricted to the beginning of an hour to the end of an hour, for example, 09:00 to 10:00.
I departed the shower area at 11:46 and was immediately told I could only swim until 12:00 or I could wait until 12:00 and swim til 13:00. How odd? I wait dutifully until high noon!
It seems the one lifeguard for maybe 30 or more swimmers doesn’t feel he can keep account of the hours. Or is it that we swimmers can’t be trusted to overstay our welcome by a few minutes. It also seems leisurely luxuriating and soaking up the pleasure of a dip is not allowed… you can only swim laps.
I was wondering if I only swim for 30 minutes can I come back later and swim another 30 minutes?
My friends abroad in the UK, US and China laughed at the absurdity. What next? TIS (This Is Spain!)

Then yesterday there was only one pool attendant who was instructing and preoccupied with a lot of people doing aqua aerobics in two lanes. There was no pool attendant monitoring the other 5 lanes of lap swimmers, is that legal? I have it! We can trust lap swimmers to be fit and healthy and not have heart attacks, seizures and drowning, but we can’t trust them to swim longer than 60 minutes or however long an hour is in Almunecar? Hmm!? just how many people do you know who swim laps for more than one hour?
last time I went to school 1 hour constitutes 60 minutes. Yes? Seems like the king of Spain or maybe the mayor of Almunecar has by decree decided that 1 hour is no longer 60 minutes ….the new hour is now 14 minutes. Did we jump planets, stop the earth turning or join a new solar system? Maybe the life guard should go back to school and take an earth science class.
