Members of the Unidad Canina de Rescate Método Arcón belonging to the Almuñécar fire service might be going to Turkey to help out following the earthquake.
Depending on what is decided in Madrid, the Almuñécar unit together with a unit from the city of Granada could be assigned to Turkey or Syria which was equally hard hit by the quake.
The destination will depend of the NGO, GERCCMA. The full name of the NGO is Grupo de Especialistas en Rescate Canino en Catástrofes Método Arcón, which has been operative since 2010.
The dogs belonging to this specialised branch of fire services are essential for locating people trapped under the rubble and are responsible for saving hundreds of lives. They train two days a week between three and four hours a training session but they live with their handlers to strengthen ties .
