Almuñécar’s Marina Project

Almuñécar was present in the International Tourism Fair in Madrid last month (Fitur) and keen to push its new marina project.

The Mayor, Juan José Ruiz Joya, said that this marina, which will be built along the Paseo de Reina Sofía, would represent a “leap in quality” for Almuñécar. However, the fact is that it is no closer; the project is still pending a favourable Environment Impact Study. Remember that the elections are coming up, so things are being touted as a done deal, even when they are still not .

The Director-General of the Agencia Pública de Puertos de Andalucía, Rafael Merino, expounded on the details of the project to the eager ears of tour operators, who flock to such tourism fairs, naturally.

Sr Merino said that there will be over 500 berths available, designed for craft between eight and 25 metres long, meanwhile the Mayor informed everybody that his administration was totally behind the subject, as he is convinced that it will make a huge economic impact on the local economy.

And it probably will, because quite besides the job generated by the construction work, the marina will have over 5,000 sq/m of space for commerical premises: restaurants, shops, etc. It will also include over 400 parking places.

The Councillor for Urban Development, Javier García, considers that the Costa Tropical has a defecit in marina berths and that the combined offer of the Marina del Este and the new Marina will represent the largest offer on the coast of Granada. He also thanks the Junta de Andalucía for their backing and collaboration in this project.

The Junta representative present, Marifran Carazo, considers that the marina will improve the standard and quality of living in Almuñécar.

Editorial comment: it’s worth noting that Motril Port is going about a transformation that will be the equivalent of David Banner turning into the Incredible Hulk, which will include a huge increase in berths in its own Marina.
