The Comisión Provincial de Patrimonio (Provincial Heritage Board) has authorised 25 projects within the province, including an aqueduct excavation in Almuñécar
The Delegate for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Fernando Egea, explained that one of the projects was for the archaeological analysis of semi-buried structures and their conservation; namely a section of Roman aqueduct in Almuñécar, categorised as a Bien de Interés Cultural in Torrecuevas, near a residential area.
This entails a careful cleaning of the visible parts of the structure and to carry out sounding to find the lay of the aqueduct beneath the ground.
Editorial comment: the amount of archaeological finds in Almuñécar is quite amazing, so much so that you cannot dig a builder’s trench in the old town without coming across a medieval or earlier structure.
