Almuñécar River Clean Up

Over a score of volunteers scoured Río Seco & Río Verde, collecting up litter and rubbish in general from the river course last weekend.

ALM River Clean Up SP22These environmental-minded citizens carried out the task Friday afternoon and Saturday morning and between them filled 60 rubbish bags with drink cans, bottles, pieces of plastic and other domestic refuse.

There were larger things to be removed, too, such as car wheels, supermarket trolleys and pieces of furniture.

Had this not been carried out, then all this rubbish would have ended up in the surf, on the beach or on the seabed, after a heavy rainfall, pointed out the Councillor for the Environment, Luis Aragón.

Of course, they couldn’t do the whole river bed, but rather the stretches of them that actually pass through the town; i.e., Río Verde up to the N-340 bridge and Río Seco up as far as behind the schools.

As for what profile the volunteers had, there were both young and old and locals and foreign residents. The Councillor thanked them for their help and announced that very soon they would need volunteers for cleaning up Río Jate in La Herradura, as well as with the summer drawing to a close, the collecting up of cigarette butts from the beaches.
