Toddler’s Fatal Shop Accident

In the Barrio La Victoria in the city of Málaga a toddler was killed when a piece of supermarket furniture  fell on top of her.

It was just before five in the afternoon of Tuesday the 24th when a family entered into Carrefour Market on Calle Gordón. The parents had their children with them, aged six, four and two. It was as the parents were waiting at the check out with the children playing about a metre away next to a bank of lockers by the shopping trolleys – where shoppers can store items whilst they shop.

Suddenly, it seems the locker cabinet toppled forward (for reasons unknown to date). The two elder children managed to get out of the way but the 2-year-old girl was struck on the head by the heavy structure.

Rapidly staff and shoppers phoned 112 and within five minutes the Policía Local had arrived, escorting a medicalised ambulance (UVI). The paramedics tried to stabilize the child’s condition in order to move her but her condition rapidly began deteriorating so she was put in the ambulance, which now had a six-rider police escort, to the Hospital Materno Infantil.

Everything was in place awaiting its arrival but despite all attempts to save her life, she died soon after arrival.

Police investigators were sent immediately to the supermarket to find out how it was possible for this heavy locker unit to topple over.
