If you want to go skiing up on the Sierra Nevada, you have until the 24th of this month, which is when the skiiing season ends.
With these last rains that have fallen, the company that runs the ski station considers that there is snow enough to last until the 24th of April. This means that it will be a good Easter on Sierra Nevada.
The politician in charge of the public company, Cetursa Sierra Nevada, Jesús Ibáñez, announced this upon questioning at the presentation of the Ultra Sierra Nevada 2022, which was held in the provincial office of the Junta de Andalucia in Granada.
He explained that after a long wait hoping for a decent snowfall because of the drought, March turned into a great month for it, leaving optimum snow quality for skiing as it has not yet compacted. There is still dust up there thanks to the calima in many areas but it hasn’t affected the skiing quality of the slopes.
Consequently the businesses at the ski resort; hotels, restaurants, shops, etc, have had a good month, too. In fact, this week 780,000 skiers, as well as 200,000 non-ski users (snowboards, etc) meaning that almost a million visitors have visited the slopes this season.
Visitors have also been able to enjoy trips in Russian sleighs in the Mirlo Blanco complex.
Five centimetres of snow fell on Thursday onto the 80.9km of skiable area on the 93 slopes available. The ski station has 16 chair lifts operating.
Going back to the closing date, Junta Delegate,Jesús Ibáñez, explained that their object is to reach the 17th of April (Easter Sunday) and then after that, they will have to play it by ear because it depends on the temperature and snow conditions, but with the present snow reserves, so to speak, they should make it until the 24th.
