Handicap-Parking Abuse

It wasn’t that long ago that the Granada Policía Local called upon the general public to collaborate in a new campaign to stamp out handicap parking abuse.

Things were going well until a case cropped up towards the end of last month: a man was using his dead wife’s handicapped parking permit.

The police received a tip off that there was a car in the Barrio del Zaidín that was often parked in a space reserved for handicapped drivers – the informant said that the parking pass was being used fraudulently.

So a patrol was sent out to investigate and the officers confirmed that the car and parking pass belonged to a woman who had died almost a year previously, in April 2021.

The first thing they did was issue a fine for 200 euros for the illegal use of a parking permit, then they sent for the municipal tow truck to remove the vehicle. However, before the tow truck could arrive, the driver appeared and admitted that he had wrongly been using his deceased wife’s parking permit and handed it over. The police allowed him to remove the car himself from where he was not entitled to park.

The police began this campaign after receiving several complaints from handicapped drivers reporting illegal parking practices. The campaign, #TarjetoRedada began a week ago and will remain active for some time to come. You can report instances of parking-permit abuse by email to policialocal@granada.org.
