Vandals have sprayed grafitti over neolithic cave drawings in the town of Herencia (Ciudad Real/Castilla La Mancha).

The cave known as La Rendija has drawingç in black and red on the walls and ceiling. Some of the grafitti sprayed onto the cave art is of a sexual nature.

The Mayor of Herencia, Sergio García-Navas, said, “this is an attack against our cultural heritage,” whilst the Vice-Head of the Cultural Department of the regional government, Ana Muñoz, said that experts were evaluating the damage done and the cost of the work to repair it.

Furthermore, the Plataforma Estatal de Profesionales de Arqueología has issued a statment roundly condemning this vandalic act and accusing the public administrations of laxity in protecting these cave drawings which depict human figures and hunted animals.
