Eco-Reminder Christmas Tree

You're probably wondering what that strange Christmas tree is, if you live in Almuñécar, in  front of the municipal, police-station entrance.

ALM Plastic Bottle Christmas Tree 2021OK, so you weren’t but we’ll tell you anyway. It’s an EcoÁrbol which the Deparment of the Environment, in collaboration with schoolchildren, erected in the said Plaza del Agua, measuring five metres in height and decorated with plastic bottles.

These unusual Christmas decorations were created to symbolise local effort towards ‘sustainability.’

“Throughout this year, Almuñécar schools have been working on Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible [Sustainable Development Objectives] which form a part of the 2030 objective of CO2 reductions and an increase in circular economy,” explained those in charge of the campaign.

Cutting a long story short, the idea of decorating the tree with discarded plastic bottles is both so that the problem can be visualised and so that  it can be seen that plastic waste can be reused.

Editorial comment: it has another use… it keeps the officers on duty awake when it is windy outside and the tree starts to rattle.
