Water Tank Tsunami

When a large water-storage tank on an avocado plantation in Torrox suddenly ruptured, over a million litres of water swept down the hillside.

AXA Burst Water Tank Deluge 02The incident occurred around 10.15h last Friday in the area known as Monte Alegre in Torrox, which is on the municipal boundary with Sayolonga and Vélez-Málaga.

Apart from the large amount of material damage caused by 1,200,000 litres crashing down through trees and flooding past a chalet, one person was seriously injured.

The occupants of the house, Rita and Vincent, say that the deluge missed their house by a miracle as their home is only 50 metres from the collapsed water deposit.

Apparently, before this couple bought the house there had been a similar incident (in 2007) but on that occasion the building was damaged.

The house might have escaped the rampaging water but their farm didn’t; the water wrecked two cars and a pergola, as well as uprooting olive and almond trees.

The owner of the water installation was in his car at the time, which was washed down hill. Vincent had to help him out of the wrecked car.

The Policía Local, Guardia Civil and fire service were sent to the scene of the incident. They said that the couple could continue to use the house for the moment, although their electricity connection was destroyed. Rita and Vincent are waiting for the insurance company to inspect and evaluate the damage.
