Pepino Protest in Carchuna

ECO Pepino Protest 03Farmers are not happy bunnies and for the usual reason; rock-bottom prices for their produce, well below production costs.

The prices had been dropping over several days and finally patience snapped and the decision was taken one night to  meet up at noon yesterday, next to the bus stop and dump kilos and kilos of cucumbers on to the service lane running next to the N-340 where it goes through Carchuna.

The Guardia Civil stood nearby, observing, without intervening.

Readers will remember that on previous occasions farmers dumped literally tonnes of cucumbers on Carchuna beach.

Editorial comment: there is no doubt that the wholesaler fruit-clearing markets pay as little as possible and sell as high as possible so that the people who make the least money from this vegetable are the people who actually produce it.

Having said this, each year there is a glut of cucumbers because of the amount of hectares under plastic on the Costa Tropical and neighbouring Almería. Everybody is growing them with several crops per year so that there is more supply than demand, it seems.
