The Junta de Andalucía, with 335,000 euros in funding, has backed the tech company Oritia&Boreas, to build in Escúzar what will be the country’s largest wind tunnel.
The said company, amongst working on other R+D projects, has been studying the effect that wind has on metal structures and solar panels in order to improve their efficiency, hence their being noticed by the Junta’s Board of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge & Universities.
Oritia&Boreas has a laboratory in Escúzar, which is the Comarca de Alhama in the province of Granada, dedicated to aerodynamics (LACIAD). The company is a spin-off from the University of Granada.
Four million euros is being spent on this wind tunnel, named the Simulador Ambiental de Vientos Extremos (SAVE), which even has a tornado simulator within it.
It’s not all about testing models for wind-resistant mega-structures, but also about designs destined for sporting activities such as cycling or skiing.
