Hotels Close Early?

ALM Hotel Best AlcazarSummer, as far as tourism on the Costa Tropical goes, has been dismal, but autumn looks like it is going to be even worse, fear the hostelry sector.

The Costa Granadina has some 7,000 hotel beds but not all of them are on offer all year; on a normal year only 1,500 of them can be found during the off-peak seasons.

However, 2020 will have even fewer, if the prediction of the hotel sector come to pass because many such establishment are thinking of closing their door from the 15th o September, according to the Chairman of the Hotel Association, Jesús Megías. The reason, he points out, is that without foreign tourism it simply won’t be viable to maintain a hotel running.

Hotels on the coast were one of the last tourism establishment to reopen their doors after the lockdown, but what met them when they did was a drastic drop in bookings – if it hadn’t been for national tourist; i.e., Spanish tourists, they wouldn’t have made it through the summer.

Most of the hotels on the Costa Tropical are in Almuñécar and the way it works is that hotels work national tourism during the summer and international tourism during the winter, meaning that this summer they could scrape through. Another life saver for hotels during the off season are the Imserso visitors; i.e., state-subsidised old-age tourism. There is not much money to be made from it, but at least hotels can pay the bills and keep staff on.

The pandemic, however, means that hotels will neither see guests from abroad arriving, nor Spanish pensioners, who are staying put where it is safer.

All this brings us to the chiringuitos on Costa Tropical. The Chairman of the Asociación de chiringuitos de la Costa, Paco Trujillo, who already warned back in spring about a disastrous autumn. He said that if the hotels close on the 15th of September, then chiringuitos on the Costa Tropical might have to follow their example.
