The Costa Tropical’s hotels have 7,000 beds between them but some won’t be opening until the first of July – Hotel Salobreña, for example.
Things still look bleak, however, because they only have about 25% of their capacity already booked. Even optimistic figures reflect a summer with only half of the trade of 2019.
In Almuñécar six small hotels have already opened: Hotel Peña Parda Bay and Hotel La Caleta Bay in La Herradura and Hotel Casablanca, Hotel el Carmen, Hotel San Cristóbal and Hotel Goya in Almuñécar.
But there is another option (besides renting a holiday home) and that is the much loved campsites for the Spaniards who shuns the beach. Granada has 17 campings along the Costa Tropical and in Sierra Nevada, with room for 5,821 campers between them. They hope to have around 65% occupation figures for this summer.
It’s mainly foreign tourists that maintain the campsites on the Costa Tropical during the winter, making up around 90 to 95% of the trade.
