A passenger from Madrid took a flight to Lanzarote despite pending test results confirming whether he had the virus or not. It turned out that he did.
The passenger, a resident in the islands, had travelled to Madrid to attend his mother’s funeral; she had Covid-19, which is why the relatives at the burial had to be tested themselves.
Despite the pending results and being told by the medical authorities that he could not embark on any trip until they were known, the man got on a flight and literally minutes into the flight the results came back confirming that he was infected.
It was his sister who had received the test results who informed him whilst on the flight. He then informed the pilot. The pilot gave instructions for him to be sat at the tail end of the cabin, next to the rear door and away from other passengers.
The police and medical staff were waiting at Aeropuerto César Manrique for the flight to land, and escorted him off the flight into quarantine.
Consequently, the Local Goverment for the Canary Islands has opened an investigation concerning the actions of the passenger. Not only will he be in confinement for the next 14 days, but so will 13 other passengers who had been sitting around before he was moved to the back.
Flights between the islands and the mainland are limited and all passengers have to submit a signed declaration concerning their state of health.
Those passengers that had been sitting in nearby seats and are now in quarantine consider that the infected passenger’s actions were irresponsible, “I think it is disgusting,” declared one of them.
Lanzarote has 151,000 inhabitants with 84 cases of the virus to date, and with three deaths. Up to Friday the 29th of May, the island had only three active cases left. In fact, they had not had any new cases since the 30th of April.
