Salobreña has followed the steps of Almuñécar and Motril and taken the difficult decision to cancel the Fiestas del Verano this year.
The Mayor, María Eugenia Rufino, assured that, “it had been a very painful decision,” explaining, “these are very traditional fiestas, well entrenched, but I think people will understand.”
Starting with the Fiesta de San Antonio (Lobres), which is normally held on the 13th, and then the Fiestas de San Juan on the 24th of June, and, of course, the Fiestas del Carmen (La Caleta), normally celebrated on the 16th of July.
Not affected however are the bank holidays that these fiestas fall on; in other words, they remain days off.
Which brings us to the Virgen del Rosario, which is normally held in October. The decision whether to hold this decision or not will depend on how the epidemia plays out.
She concluded by expressing here concern for the Noche de San Juan when traditionally young people flock to the beaches to spend the night. For this reason she has requested that the provincial delegate for the Central Government gives Salobreña permission to close the beach off on that day.
