Two elderly people had to be rescued after going into the sea near the Tesorillo end of Playa Velilla, despite the heavy surf.
Luckily for them, they were spotted by the owner of a nearby chiringuito and two young surfers, all three of them were involved in the rescue.
Said business owner, Antonio Olmos, used his launch to reach them and bring them in.
Antonio received a call from a friend around 13.00h yesterday to say that there were two people in the water in serious difficulties because they couldn’t get back to the beach.
The two surfers mentioned above also swam out on their surfboards to help the elderly couple. This was dangerous because the current was taking the victims out to sea so the surfers were risking their lives, too.
Even Antonio Olmos was worried about going out in his launch because of the sea state, but he eventually reached the flagging couple and pulled them into the craft and then headed for the breakwater next to Aquatropic. He also towed the surfers at the same time.
An ambulance was waiting at the groyne, as well as the Policía Local and Guardia Civil. The couple were then taken to the medical centre for a check up.
The surf on a windy day is spectacular, but it is also a killer; something that some forget.
