AXA El Ingenio Shopping CentreThe Policía Local in Vélez-Málaga were called in to rescue two babies who had been left in a parked car whilst the mother went shopping.

The incident took place around 14.00h on Monday when the twin, 18-month babies had been left in a car in the Centro Comercial El Ingenio by their German mother.

Passersby had heard the babies crying in a car that had been parked in the sun with the back windows barely cracked open.

The first on the scene were the shopping centre’s security guards, who immediately contacted the Policía Local. Moments after breaking into the car and retrieving the babies an 8-year-old boy turned up who spoke to the police officers in English.

It was this boy that took the police to where the mother was inside the shopping centre -she was buying clothes, together with her 10-year-old daughter. The father, it appears was in Cómpeta where this German family was staying for a few days.

The police immediately arrested the woman, handing her over to the Policía Nacional, charged with allegedly leaving her children unattended in a life-threatening situation. The babies had spent approximately half an hour in the car, with no shade in the midday sun… in August, in the South of Spain…
