A trawler out of Caleta de Vélez on its way to the fishing grounds caught fire five nautical miles off the coast in front of Benajarafe on Thursday morning, forcing the crew to abandon her.
It was around 06.40h when El Campanero was overwhelmed by a fire aboard, forcing the crew to abandon ship in a life raft. They had tried at first to put the fire out, but it was a losing battle so the skipper gave the order to take to the life raft.
Although the cause of the fire is not known, its fibreglass construction meant that the fire quickly gained ground, leaving the crew barely enough time to evacuate the boat.
Luckily, another fishing boat, the Avante Claro, was not far away and witnessed the blaze and were first on the scene to pick up the crew.
Shortly afterwards a Guardia Civil, Maritime-Rescue launch arrived, which had been despatched by 112, who in turn had received a call around 07.30h to say that a boat was on fire between Vélez and Rincón de la Victoria
By eleven o’clock the fishing boat had sunk, according to the witnesses.
