The Guardia team for investigating road accidents (ERAT) is looking into an horrendous bus crash at the beginning of last month.
The accident occurred in Asturias and involved an Alsa bus, resulting in five deaths and 15 injured. The bus was covering the Cudillero-Gijón route when it literally wrapped itself around a motorway pillar.
The elite Guardia investigation team, based in Madrid, went to Asturias and fished around for clues to be taken back to Madrid for analysis, amongst them the tachograph for a detailed study of speeds and any driving anomaly.
They’re also looking into the 40-year-old driver’s medical records to see if he had previous medical conditions or illnesses that could have influenced his driving. The trajectory of the bus in the last metres before impact and the lack of skid marks could indicate that the driver had lost consciousness moments before the collision.
