Ann Jenkins is currently organizing a Community Beach Clean Up in La Herradura and Marina del Este on Saturday, October 6th from 10:00am until 12:30pm.
The beach clean up coincides with the 6th Annual Festival del Mar, that is hosted by Amigos del Mar, which is a great way to combine efforts toward helping keep our sea plastic free. There are currently 14 Team Captains, including a Teen Team led by Student-Youth Ambassadors, Natasha Langley and Clara Ávila Alguacil, graduates of IES Villanueva del Mar in La Herradura.
Each team will be assigned a dedicated area throughout the bay and the marina within which to focus the clean up efforts. Medio Ambiente will be providing FREE clean up bags and gloves to all the volunteers and will be taking away the garbage and recycling. They will also be providing prizes for the children that participate.
“It has been incredible to see how many expats and Los Herradureños are excited to create a team to work together to help keep our sea plastic free. We estimate that over 80 people, including children, are going to be picking up micro-plastics, cigarette butts and marine waste that day. Everyone is excited to get dressed up in funny costumes and we are helping them get into the spirit by distributing FREE temporary tattoos, designed by Cara Waddell, to all the Volunteers,” said Organizer, Ann Jenkins.
Playa Mango is providing a free beer or soft drink and paella after the event to each of the volunteers, along with a complimentary shuttle for those volunteers based in Marina del Este to get to the after party.
Antonio Matínez, owner of the newest chiringuito on the beach in La Herradura, is “happy to support this important initiative and proud to be involved. Small business owners need to become more actively involved in supporting ways to keep plastic and cigarette butts from entering our sea and when volunteers from within the community dedicate their time, we have to step up and say, Thank You.”
This event is designed to inspire people with a passion to help keep our sea plastic free to volunteer for multiple Community Beach Clean Ups throughout the year: some events will be general clean ups and some will be in targeted zones. The November clean up date will be announced shortly.
It is free to become a Team Captain, join an existing team, or sign up for a future Community Clean Up date.
