On the same day as the firework explosion in Galicia, rescue services were called in when a house collapsed in the centre of Madrid.
The incident occured on the Paseo General Martínez Campos where two workmen were carrying out renovations on the top floor of a 7-storey building.
All told, 24 workmen were working on the job but the two above-mentioned workers are believed to be buried under the rubble.
The fire service is using dogs, specially trained for earthquake situations to locate the missing men, although as time advances hopes of finding them alive are fading.
It appears that the reinforcing structure of the building gave way on the 7th floor, bringing down the whole structure to the 2nd floor.
Rescue work was being hampered by the further collapse of masonry on site, which has led to the provoking of a controlled collapse of the more unstable areas away from where the victims are most likely to be.
