Along all the autovías in Spain there is a perimeter fence to keep wild animals out to avoid accidents, but when elephants arrive by lorry…
A lorry transporting several elephants turned over yesterday on the A-30 where it goes through the municipality of Pozo Cañada in Albacete – the BBC places Albacete in Murcia, but it is, in fact, in Castilla-La Mancha.
Without doubt, the first drivers on the scene were amazed to be confronted with a small herd of elephants sharing their autovía. However, the Guardia Civil quickly diverted the traffic onto the N-301.
Crash crews are used to lifting and removing large lorries, but lifting something that is walking around and wriggling is a completely different kettle of fish. However, removed they were and the autovía reopened.
The video was posted by the Pozo Cañada Town Hall on its Twitter account, which caused a stir. It was probably the best promotional video ever, because everybody knows where Pozo Cañada is now… and it didn’t cost a penny.
Sadly however, one elephant died and two were injured, according to the Director-General of the Dirección General de Tráfico, Gregorio Serrano. He also stated that the police are looking into what caused the accident.
