Our hosts don’t know how to use roundabouts – that’s clear, but now people on the shady side are exploiting this driving defect.
Dear old Granada is 20% higher than the national average for car-insurance scams involving false claims, and the majority of these ‘accidents’ happen on roundabouts. We’re talking about one in every 13 insurance claims.
In fact, there is a name for them, Los Rotonderos (una rotonda is a roundabout) – best you watch out for them!
How does it work? Well, by driving in the wrong lane. Yes, you silently scream, everybody drives on the wrong lane, so how can I differentiate? A fair call, but nevertheless El Retondero hogs the wrong lane and causes a crash with somebody driving in the correct lane.
This practice was practically unheard of before Granada seemingly invented it – we did an article on the original one – and now Granada has exported it. The original one involved three families in Fuente Vaqueros, who between them illegally obtained a total of 300,000 euros…
According to a yearly report on insurance fraud issued by the insurance company, Linea Direct, there was one particular case in Granada that involved 19 provoked collisions and 36 injuries.
