Torrenueva Cemetery Probs

MOT Torrenueva cemeteryThe cemetery in Torrenueva is causing ripples: for the last 30 years the locals have been running it but now the Town Hall wants to change things.

The Mayor considers that the cemetery needs to be ‘run officially’ (regularizado), either by running the graveyard itself or putting it in the hands of a private company. The locals, however, are having none of it, and it looks like they have got their way.

The locals constituted an administrative board all those years ago, which was charged with running it, and now after a new vote – because they get a say in Town Hall decisions – the majority decided in favour of the arrangement to date to continue as is.

The Chairman of the neighbourhood board, Pepe Dueñas, explained that they have always taken care of the facilities, keeping it clean and managing the burial niches themselves, right back to the very beginnings of Torrenueva – the grandparents of the present board members did it before them, and now this present generation has been doing it since the 80’s.
