Frenchman Causes Accident

SPN Figueres AccidentA top Catalan official has confirmed that the French driver that caused a road accident near Pont de Molins (Gerona), had lost his licence last December for drink driving.

The police report states that the driver was speeding when he hit an oncoming car. The five occupants of the Volkswagen Golf, all French nationals of ages between 19 and 22, residents of Perpignan, Carcassone and Toulouse, died in the collision.

Furthermore, the police found 6,570 euros in cash and two bottles of vodka in the wrecked car – most of the occupants had police records for drug peddling and car theft.

The driver of the other car, a Dacia Sandero, was rushed to the main hospital in Gerona, and although seriously injured, his life is not in danger. His two passengers, however, died in the impact.

During 2015, a total of 8,345 people were found to be driving without a valid licence, of which 5,191 had lost their licence for driving infractions and 2,254 had never possessed one in the first place.

Lastly, of the eight dead, not one of the five occupants of the Volkswagen was wearing a seat belt, nor was the rear-seat passenger in the Dacia.
