It was an Easter parade with a difference, thanks to the antics of an apparently drunken second lieutenant who was leading the Spanish Legion band.

The video of the Semana Santa procession in Antequera, Málaga, aptly called Mayor Dolor (Greater Pain), has now found world fame, thanks to Youtube.

In the footage, the officer is seen struggling to keep on his feet – at at least one point a NCO abandoned the ranks to come to his rescue, although it wasn’t appreciated.

Obviously, he was not very popular with the crowd, who berated him. His reaction was to tell them all to quieten down with a gesture for silence.

The officer, Second Lieutenant Manuel Ruiz, claimed that he did indeed have a small alcoholic beverage before the parade set out but his state was not down to the alcoholic content.

No, he is convinced that somebody slipped something into his drink so he had a blood sample taken for analysis which gave a positive reading for methamphetamine…

Somebody might be requesting a transfer to the French Foreign Legion if he finds out who it was…
