Gone are the days when the Almuñécar aquarium languished behind locked doors, in disrepair, because summer visitor figures are healthy, to say the least.

The penultimate weekend of August, with Almuñécar’s beaches virtually closed because of the winds and dangerous currents, saw visitors flocking to this marine wildlife centre.

Five hundred people went to visit the Acuario that weekend, most of them adults but with one in four a minor.

During July, 4,658 visitors walked around its aquarium-lined corridors, which is not bad considering that only a year ago the facilities were still closed, undergoing repairs and restocking.
