The Mayor’s party, the PP, won the most votes, giving them eight council seats; that’s two more than the last elections. However, she falls short of a governing majority.
During the last legislature, Mayor Trinidad Herrera, took the Mayor’s office thanks to coalition support, even though Juan Carlos Benavides won the most votes and had the most council seats.
Benavides came in second on Sunday, giving him seven council seats; the same amount as the last elections but this time he lost the most voted party accolade.
The socialists (PSOE) continued its electoral descent – despite a change in candidate – winning three seats, thus losing one.
Fourth position went to Más Almuñécar with two seats. It’s worth explaining that these two ex-PA councillors gave Sra. Herrera the Mayoralty in the last elections and will no doubt form a governing coalition again keeping Herrera in power, mostly owing to their personal animosity with Benavides.
Lastly, the IU dropped from two to only one seat, however, this seat is the veritable position, because it would stop the PSOE and Benavides forming a coalition because the IU seat belongs to Fermín Tejero – again personal animosity is in play.
Summing up: PP 8, PA 7, PSOE 3, Más Almuñécar 2 and IU 1.
