Local Elections: May 24th

Local ElectionsThis is your only chance to have a say in Spanish politics, because these are the only elections that you, as an EU citizen, can participate in.

The Local or Municipal Elections take place on the 24th of this month and the results are widely considered to be the strongest indication on how the General Election will play out in November of this year.

Whereas the majority of the regions of Spain will be running the Regional Elections alongside the Municipal ones, here in Andalucía, the Regional Elections were held in March.

This year, for the first time, there is a much wider choice of parties to choose from. In some cases, the amount of parties has doubled on the Costa Tropical.

Since the return to democracy in the 70’s the Spanish Parliamentary system has been dominated by a bi-partisan system; like in the United States where the control of the country lies with two major parties.

With the irruption of over a dozen new parties, these Municipal Elections could strongly indicate an end to this era in Spanish politics.
